NYGC’s Center for Genomics of Neurodegenerative Disease Provides Whole-Genome Sequencing and Analysis for Answer ALS Data Portal

January 8, 2021

On January 8, 2021, timed to commemorate Stephen Hawking’s birthday, Answer ALS launched a “The Data is Here” campaign to announce world-wide free access to the Answer ALS Data Portal.

The portal will empower researchers with the critical tools necessary to explore the enormous trove of data collected from over 1,000 ALS patient participants and controls. Through the use of AI and machine learning, Answer ALS data will serve as the foundation for new clinical trials, identifying eligible trial participants, and to find drug-responsive biomarkers or diagnostics. The Data Portal combines “multi-omics” data with other data and makes these datasets publicly available. The datasets, which include clinical, genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic, and epigenomic sequence data, were all derived from individual Answer ALS study participants.

The New York Genome Center, a member of the Answer ALS Research Consortium, provided the whole genomic sequencing/analysis available in the Data Portal. This work was conducted under the supervision of Hemali Phatnani, PhD, Director, Center for Genomics of Neurodegenerative Disease, NYGC.
