NYGC Welcomes New Core Faculty Focused on Genetic Data Privacy and a Multimodal Approach to Disease Research

New York, NY  ·  January 6, 2022

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is pleased to announce the arrival of two new NYGC Core Faculty Members, who will each hold joint appointments at NYGC member institutions:

Gamze Gürsoy, PhD, is a bioinformatician specializing in genetic data privacy, a critically important aspect of genomics research. She and her lab team will be developing software, file formats, and pipelines that will enable broad data sharing among researchers while also preserving individual patient and study participant privacy. She joins the NYGC from Yale University, where she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry Department. She has also been a Visiting Scientist at the NYGC since this fall. Dr. Gürsoy obtained her PhD in Bioinformatics from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She will also hold a joint appointment as Assistant Professor at NYGC member institution Columbia University in the Department of Biomedical Informatics as well as an appointment in the Columbia University Computer Science Department.

Chenxu Zhu, PhD, is focused on the application and development of innovative genomic tools and methods, including single-cell technologies, to gain greater understanding of molecular mechanisms of gene regulation in human development and disease, particularly in cancer. He joins the NYGC from the San Diego branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, where he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Bing Ren’s Laboratory of Gene Regulation. He obtained his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Peking University. Dr. Zhu will also hold a joint appointment as Assistant Professor at NYGC member institution Weill Cornell Medicine in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics and Institute for Computational Biomedicine.

Lending their expertise and ingenuity to the unique and highly collaborative research environment established at NYGC, the Gürsoy and Zhu laboratories will work with all NYGC faculty and staff labs as well as with NYGC member institutions and other research partners to advance their research goals.
