New York, NY  ·  August 2, 2021

NYGC board members, scientists from NYGC member institutions, and NYGC collaborative partners and supporters are also among the honorees recognized as forward-thinking leaders driving the life sciences sector’s growth in New York.

Tom Maniatis, PhD, Evnin Family Scientific Director and CEO of the New York Genome Center (NYGC), has been named to City & State’s first “Life Sciences Power 50” list that highlights key individuals driving the life sciences sector’s growth in New York.

“As New York struggled through the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, one of the few sectors of the local economy that not only survived but thrived was the life sciences. But it wasn’t an overnight success story,” note the publication’s editors.  Years ago, forward-thinking leaders saw other major cities emerging as biotech hot spots and identified the potential – a highly educated workforce, world-class health care institutions, real estate developers, and Wall Street types eager to invest – to cultivate a major life sciences hub in New York.”

The editors recognize Dr. Maniatis for his role in overseeing the NYGC’s ongoing collaborative genomic research, which includes development of genomic methods and research to better understand cancer and neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases, as well as for mobilizing quickly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to launch the COVID-19 Genomics Research Network.

Also included among the honorees are NYGC Board Members Russell Carson, Tony Evnin, Richard Lifton, Jim Simons, Bruce Stillman, Craig Thompson, and Gordon Tomaselli; NYGC Senior Associate Member Harold Varmus; and other leading scientists from NYGC member institutions and collaborative partners; JLABS; and NYGC supporters Partnership Fund for NYC, NYC Economic Development Corporation and Empire State Development.

The complete list of honorees can be found in the August 2 print issue of City & State magazine and online here.
