Tuuli Lappalainen, PhD
Senior Associate Faculty Member, NYGC Professor, KTH Royal Institute of Technology; Director, National Genomics Infrastructure and Genomics Platform at SciLifeLab, Sweden
- Harold and Golden Lamport Research award presented by Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons
- Leena Peltonen Prize for Excellence in Human Genetics.
Tuuli Lappalainen, PhD, is a Senior Associate Faculty Member at the New York Genome Center.
Dr. Lappalainen’s research focuses on functional genetic variation in human populations. She and her lab are particularly interested in understanding molecular and cellular effects of genetic variants and their contribution to genetic risk for both common and rare diseases and traits. Her team analyzes these questions both by statistical integration of molecular data from large human cohorts and by experimental perturbations of the genome combined with single-cell sequencing. She has made important contributions to several international research consortia in human genomics, including the 1000 Genomes Project, the Geuvadis Consortium, the Genotype Tissue Expression (GTEx) Project, TOPMed, and other programs. She is a principal investigator of numerous NIH grants.
Dr. Lappalainen’s recent awards include the Harold and Golden Lamport Research Award presented by Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Leena Peltonen Prize for Excellence in Human Genetics, and the Göran Gustafsson Prize in Molecular Biology. She is an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization, EMBO.
Prior ExperienceDr. Lappalainen received her PhD in Genetics from the University of Helsinki, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Geneva and Stanford University. In 2014-2021 she was a Core Faculty Member at NYGC as well as an Assistant and then Associate Professor of Systems Biology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
