Simon Tavaré, PhD, Joins the New York Genome Center as Senior Researcher

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) recently welcomed Simon Tavaré, PhD, as Senior Researcher. Dr. Tavaré is one of the world’s experts in statistics and probability in computational biology. He joins NYGC while continuing his appointments as the Director of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, and as Professor in the Departments of Oncology and Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge. His research interests include statistical genetics, evolutionary approaches to cancer, and stochastic computation. Dr. Tavaré will forge connections and collaborations between NYGC and other cancer research centers around the world.

Dr. Tavaré said, “I am delighted to be joining NYGC and look forward to contributing to their efforts in computational biology.  I also hope to develop relationships between my Institute, NYGC and other centers in the New York area.”

Dr. Tavaré received his BSc degree, MSc degree and PhD in probability and statistics from the University of Sheffield, UK. He spent 25 years in academia in the USA before moving to Cambridge in 2004. In 2009 he was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) and in 2011 as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). He gave the American Mathematical Society’s Einstein Public Lecture in Mathematics, entitled “Cancer by the numbers”, in 2015 and was an invited speaker at ICIAM2015 in Beijing. He is currently President of the London Mathematical Society.
